Polar bear got lost in Russia, hundreds of miles from home [video, photo]

Villagers in Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula were stunned this week by the sight of an exhausted-looking polar bear wandering around (and on top of!) their homes, scavenging for food, hundreds of miles away from its normal habitat. Did climate change cause this? Maybe.

On Wednesday, Russian regional and national media [here's one, here's another, and another] reported the polar bear, who looks emaciated and very tired from their ordeal, somehow wandered into Tilichiki village, roughly 700 km/430 miles south of Kamchatka.

Here's video of the poor feller poking around homes in the little village, video posted by Kamchatka Krai on IG.

From the Associated Press:

Environmentalists say the bear could have lost its bearings while drifting on an ice floe.

Locals are making it feel welcome, giving it some fish.

Authorities in Kamchatka are preparing a rescue effort later this week, in which they will use a sedative to put the bear to sleep and then airlift it to Chukotka in a helicopter.

A bear was spotted outside the Omni Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire this week by hotel worker Sam Geesaman, who snapped a couple of breathtaking shots around 5 a.m. on June 29.

From New Hampshire's WMUR News:

Geesaman said he was working the overnight shift at the hotel and wanted to catch a glimpse of the sunrise off the back veranda of the hotel when he spotted the young black bear coming up the stairs to investigate a nearby trash can.

Geesaman said he notified fellow staff members and stood guard to prevent any guests from stumbling upon the bear.

“While following behind it attempting to usher it to the nearest exit, the bear decided to hop up on the rail and enjoy the sunrise as I had intended to do myself,” Geesaman told WMUR.

When in bear country, ALWAYS lock your vehicle doors. Here are snapshots that show how a Colorado bear totally trashed the inside of this vehicle after accidentally locking itself inside, when foraging for food.

Colorado's Snowmass Village Police Department shared these photos on Facebook Monday, showing how much damage the bear did after finding its way inside an unlocked vehicle.

Colorado's KKTV television reports:

"Have you ever wondered what happens when a bear breaks into a car?"

Police answered that question with the photos at the top and bottom of this article.

"Insurance doesn't usually cover this," police added to their Facebook page.

Snowmass Village is about 160 miles west of Colorado Springs, just west of Aspen.

Beekeeper uses bears to taste test his honey

Trabzon is a northeastern province of Turkey. You'll find a lot of light industry there: small farmers, plantations growing tea and craftsman. It also happens to be home to some of the most sought-after honey in the world.

Ibrahim Sedef, is a beekeeper who, along with his bees, works in the region, producing Anzer honey. It's aromatic stuff and is wildly believed to have curative powers—your healthcare mileage may vary. People love Sedef's honey. Unfortunately, so do a bunch of local bears.

Sedef tried a number of solutions to keep the animals away from his beehives: he locked the hives up for the night. He secured his home against the animals breaking in. He even left out sweet fruit and baked goods for the bears to draw them away from his products. No dice. Over three years, he lost over $10,000 in profits. At this point, a lot of folks may have turned to having the animals killed, in order to protect their profits. Not Sedef: he enlisted the furry brutes to do a bit of taste testing for him, instead.

Watch a black bear break into a middle school

Last Thursday, a young black bear broke into Fretz Middle School in Bradford, Pennsylvania. As it was evening, the only humans inside were the custodians. The bear eventually left of its own accord.

I'm positive that this was the plot of an (ahem) Berenstein Bears book I read as a child.

Two bear cubs rescued after 'bearjacking' van, locking selves in, honking horn

Two bear cubs have been rescued after somehow managing to break into and then lock themselves inside some guy's van, then honking the horn for 20 minutes straight as if to summon help.

And there's video.

Isn't nature magical?

Says Jeff Stokely of Gatlinburg Tennessee, “2 cubs opened the door and got in and then locked the doors with my key inside. They blew the horn until I got the door unlocked and got them out.”

Here's the video, part 1.

Here's part 2.

Here's part 3.

Stokely says he heard honking for 20 minutes before he finally went to investigate.

Jeff Stokely works with A.S.A.P. Security Systems. He parked his van outside a customer's house in Gatlinburg on Friday, and got to work. It wasn't long before he started hearing a car horn blowing from somewhere. He says it was about 20 minutes before it occurred to him that it might be his own van.

(...) Stokely deduced the bears had climbed in through the driver side door - but that door was now closed. And locked. Stokely believes the bears must have hit the lock button once they were inside.

After capturing the wandering intruders on video, Stokely opened the back door to the van. The two cubs eventually lumbered out and returned to the woods.

Mama Bear was not observed anywhere near the incident.

Gatlinburg is hardcore, y'all.

Dumpster diving bear rescued from trash can

In Northern California, sheriff's deputies helped a large bear get out of a locked trash bin, which the bear somehow managed to get stuck inside while dumpster diving for dinner.

The bear was discovered Monday in a locked trash bin in Kings Beach, on Lake Tahoe’s northern shore, by Placer County sheriff’s deputies. From AP:

Video the agency posted to Facebook shows a deputy shining a flashlight on the dumpster and the bear suddenly popping its head out. As the startled deputy jumps back, others laugh and say “whoa!”

They recognize it as the bear they’ve dubbed “T-Shirt” for a patch of white fur on its chest. The agency says the animal has had run-ins with deputies before.

They unlock the dumpster from a distance and fling open one of the doors. The bear is stuck in a smaller opening in the top of one of the doors, but eventually drops down, pushes it open and lumbers out.

Some idiot painted graffiti on a Russian polar bear and now the animal likely won't survive

In Russia, some idiot spraypainted this polar bear with "T-34," the model of a Soviet tank. The video was shared by World Wildlife Fund employee Sergey Kavry who lives in the remote region of Chutkotka. From CNN:

In the comments (on Facebook where Kavry posted the video, he) said he obtained the video via WhatsApp from indigenous minorities in Chukotka, in Russia's far east, though it is not clear from the video where it was filmed...

Anatoly Kochnev, a senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti that, while the black paint is likely to wash off, the polar bear might find it difficult in the meantime to use its coat as camouflage while hunting.

It's not known why the animal was painted. Kochnev said it was probably the work of "pranksters."

Box full of bear cubs bewilders North Carolina man

'I said what in the world': Two bear cubs left on man's doorstep in Camden, NC

On Tuesday night, North Carolina resident Cornelius Williams got home from the grocery store and heard a squeaky sound coming from the direction of a cardboard box someone left in his walkway, reports WTKR-TV.

This was weird. It was night. Williams called authorities for help.

When a deputy approached the box and looked inside, surprise: two newborn bear cubs were inside the box.

You have GOT to hear Cornelius Williams' impersonation of the bear cubs' cries. It's pretty hilarious.

The bears were taken to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro to be examined and cared for, news outlets reported.

He peered a bit closer, as it was dark outside.

""I see the box sitting right on my walkway - right here close to my car - and I looked inside and thought I saw Tasmanian devils," said Williams. “The noise was the reason I was so concerned - it was like a squeaky noise," Williams described.

When the deputy arrived at his home, a quick investigation revealed the animal inside the cardboard box was not one, but two newborn baby bear cubs.

"I said, 'What in the world?" No way, no how... if the mama bear would have seen me in the yard, I would have been a Happy Meal," said Williams. An incredibly bizarre find, something the sheriff has never seen.

"A little strange; we just don't run up on this all the time," said Jones. "Bears are not strangers to Camden County. We have a very large population, but why would someone leave them deliberately at someone's home?"

"Why me? Was this a setup? How in the world could someone take two baby bears less than a day old and bring [them] up here, put [them] in a box and with a blanket on top?" Williams wondered.

This 'foster mom' bear is raising a cub saved by a dog

An orphaned black bear cub has been placed with a substitute bear mom this week after the little baby bear was saved by a family dog, and tenderly brought to safety.

The amazing images of the rescued black bear cub in this post are from the Wildlife Center of Virginia, you can donate to them here.

Meet Black Bear cub #20-0084.

From the Wildlife Center of Virginia:

On February 6, an infant male Black Bear cub was admitted to the Wildlife Center. The cub was found the evening before in Washington County when a family dog brought home the tiny cub. The homeowners were unsure where the cub came from, so they called the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). A biologist transported the cub to the Center.

Dr. Claire, the Center’s veterinary intern, examined the cub when he arrived and found that the cub was bright and alert, and vocalizing readily. The cub weighed just 540 g – smaller than cub #20-0064 at admission – and was mildly dehydrated, though otherwise was healthy.

The cub was settled into an incubator, and the rehabilitation staff added him to their ‘round-the-clock bottle feeding schedule

The wildlife rehab staff described Black Bear cub #20-0084 as bright, alert and “vocalizing readily.” They say the cub was placed with a new bear mother who was already nursing three cubs of her own on Wednesday.

From Southwest Virginia Today:

Staff members soon plan to introduce the cub to another cub at the center. The second cub was found in Craig County.

“DGIF reported that they located two active den sites, both with sows and cubs. The dens are difficult to access; the biologists will continue to assess the situation and will plan to attempt fostering during the week of February 10. It's likely that the two cubs will be fostered separately, due to the size and age difference; the biologist will also need to assess the number and age of cubs present at the den sites and will make final decisions in the field,” the center’s website said.

Bassinger said the dog that found the cub carried it gently home and did not hurt the cub.

“There were no signs of injury to the cub whatsoever,” Bassinger said.

Bear that strolled through CA neighborhood is back in forest where he belongs

The large black bear in this video was observed ambling around a Monrovia, California neighborhood last Friday morning. The bear walked through residential lawns, driveways and rested in a nearby alley.

The Monrovia Police Department says officers observed the bear's activities, after people phoned in, and called state Department of Fish and Wildlife workers to the neighborhood.

From the Associated Press:

The bear was eventually tranquilized and taken to the nearest suitable forest habitat, said Tim Daly, a Fish and Wildlife spokesman. “One of our guys out on the scene described the bear as huge — about 400 pounds (181 kilograms) — female and older,” Daly said. “In the bear world, she would be described as elderly.”

The bear was otherwise fine, he said.

“It’s a little alarming how close and comfortable people were getting up next to this bear, but there were no incidents, so we’re happy about that,” he added. It was believed to be the same bear seen a day earlier in Monrovia, where it’s not uncommon for animals to wander out of the sprawling Angeles National Forest above the city.

Monrovia sits at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, and when the weather warms up the big mammals tend to come down and look for food each year, according to the Monrovia city bear safety page.
